Añana Salt SPA

The Añana Salt Spa is one of the initiatives launched by the Salt Valley Foundation to promote the full recovery of one of the most unusual cultural landscapes that exist. The construction of this facility has provided Salt Valley with a unique outdoor Salt Spa, which enhances the attractions of our guided tour programme by creating a space where both recreational and therapeutic aspects combine.

The Spa consist of a foot bath and hand bath, where visitors may dip their hands and feet in specially designed facilities, recalling how salt workers used to bathe when producing salt in the evaporation pans.

The Salt Spa project began with a request from former salt workers who, given their own experience, knew of the benefits the controlled contact with hypersaline waters from the valley springs had for their health. Scientific studies have proven the therapeutic properties of these baths, highlighting improvements in blood circulation, remineralisation of the skin, improved elasticity of the tissues and reduced possibilities of developing osteoarthritis. It is also especially suited for inflammatory joint disease, tendinitis, port-surgery recovery and post-fracture treatments as well as problems related to eczema and allergies.

On the other hand, apart from the advantages from direct contact with salt water, visitors may enhance the benefits by following the instructions included in a therapeutic exercise manual developed by specialists. The activities described require immersing hands and feet in hypersaline water from the springs, and are specially designed to improve mobility and gain strength.

These manuals, illustrated with explanatory photographs, will be distributed on site at the Salt Spa and include details of the exercises as well as recommendations and effects.
